Having studied portraits, I followed the concept of developing an abstraction which conveyed the life of the individual, using the overt image of the face. I explored the idea that the person’s life is shown through their imperfections and specifically, their eyes; that the pressure and stress of life is literally transparent on the face. I wanted to portray a sense of damage with a glamorous undertone.

The detail and clarity added a post-apocalyptic sense, creating a stillness within the photographs. Establishing an intimacy and connecting strangers with strangers, is the reason I take images. The background and smaller details in the images are the underlying discoveries from the peripheral vision. The tone of the portrait has already been established; intimate, confrontational and offering a sense of vacancy. Slightly airing on the surreal elements of portraiture in the manipulation style, the addition of commercial lighting obscures the expected artistic interpretation of a portraiture.
